Most fences do not fail all at once. A couple of posts go soft at ground level, the line starts to lean, and then one storm finishes what four years of humidity started. Caught early it is a repair. Caught late it is a rebuild.
We will tell you which one you are looking at, including when the answer is the cheaper one. There is no sense selling somebody a whole fence when six posts and a dozen boards would give them another decade.
Rot in the Valley almost always starts at the same place: the few inches of post right at the soil line, where it is wet, warm and airless. The top of the post can look perfect while the bottom has gone. That is why we push on posts rather than looking at them.
Storm damage is different — it is sudden, and often the boards are fine while the posts have snapped or pulled. Salvaging the good material is usually worth doing, and we will separate what can be reused from what cannot before pricing the job.
The only way to find rot at the soil line is by hand. Looking at it tells you nothing.
